“That's pretty tough!”（それはとても難しいね） prettyを使ったカジュアル表現の使い方

“That's pretty tough!”（それはとても難しいね）

口語でよく使われる表現「pretty」

みなさんのよく知っている「かわいい、可憐な」

これは形容詞として使われる時の意味です。

pretty toughで使われる場合は副詞で

意味は「かなり」＝veryとほぼ同じ（厳密にはveryのほうが上）。

つまり、That's pretty tough! はThat's very tough (difficult)!と言い換えできるんです。

「それは、かわいいタフガイです」なんて訳さないで下さいね（笑）


使う相手は友達など、フランクな相手がいいでしょう。
とてもカジュアルな表現なので、目上の方には使わない方がいいです。

ex)
I find studying for exams pretty tough.
I do 4 gym sessions a week which is pretty tough.



prettyはこの他にも
pretty good, pretty cold, pretty tiredなど様々な場面で使われます。

ex)
It's pretty cold this morning.
The hotel was very good. I was pretty impressed.
I have a pretty difficult class this afternoon. I find it very hard to understand the topic.




prettyと並んで覚えたい表現が「fairly」
意味は「まあまあ、まずまず」　Pretty＞fairly

“fairly tough” ＝ not very tough and more tough（まあまあ難しい）

ex)
The movie was fairly good, but I expected it to be a lot better.
The weather is fairly nice today, but yesterday was much better.
